FarmVille

I spent the first 6 months of my tenure on Facebook clicking "ignore" to all of the FarmVille requests and hiding all of the FarmVille activity on my Newsfeed. It was annoying. Why would grown-ups want to work a virtual farm? I asked myself.

This past week, our pastor began a series called "FarmVille". So I decided I ought to check it out to see what all the fuss was about. Since I expressed such skepticism about an adult playing with a virtual farm, I know you're expecting my outlook on the whole thing to have changed since I now have firsthand virtual farming experience. However, now I'm standing in my virtual fields in my denim overalls still scratching my head and asking, Why would grown-ups want to work a virtual farm?

Thankfully, the value of the sermon series at church surpasses the value I see in plowing a plot of land which is 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch, planting it with a click of the mouse, and then harvesting the plant within a day or two. Last week we talked about being neighborly. You see on Farmville, you can visit your friends' farms to weed their gardens or shoo away gophers for them. You get Farmville cash when you do good deeds like this. In real life, though, we're supposed to be doing nice things for our neighbors without being paid or rewarded in any way. This coming week we are going to be talking about the farming metaphor in the Bible--weeds, cultivating, watering, etc.

I'm enjoying the series, and I get why the pastor titled it as he did; the title piques the interest of the many Facebook users in the congregation. It's the actual game or application or whatever you call it that I don't get. My kids would definitely get into this; they are not permitted on Facebook, however. Perhaps I'm just not kid enough at heart and am completely missing the entertainment value of the virtual homestead. I suppose that's a good thing in this instance, though, because what I don't need is another time waster!

LOL! I've been avoiding FarmVille. I did get talked into at least joining to help out my child (the 20-yr old one). But so far, they can't make me play!

Now Mafia Wars? I love it. There's just something so family-friendly about icing people with all three kids.... ;o)

Ha! Been clicking "ignore" on all the Mafia Wars stuff too!! :) As dumb as this FarmVille stuff is, I feel myself drawn to it. Like I have to check and see if there is anything that can be harvested. Like if I miss harvesting time, it will die and all those vegetables will be wasted in virtual land.

I ignore all that stuff, too. I just don't get it. :) But the sermon series sounds interesting! Like you said, one thing I'm trying to raise my kids to learn is that we don't do the right thing to get a reward.

Does it help to know that Mafia Wars is "special"? As in, you get rewarded for doing the wrong thing?

clever sermon! i don't get the big deal about farmville and i have blocked all those applications. i have several friends who are "addicted"...the last thing i need to do is waste more time on the computer! :)

One of the many reasons that I do not participate in Facebook is all of the garbage information that pops up on my screen that makes it darn near impossible to locate the stuff that I want. Frankly, I do not care if Johnny “The Limp” Kneebuster earned a Mafia Don award last night. I’m just kinda cranky that way.

Animal Crossing, Wii version. You live in a little town, earn bells, do nice deeds, pay a mortgage, help out friends. My son LOVES it. It is definitely a metaphor for real life.

(PS I ignore all apps on FB. It is how my laptop became infected with a serious virus)

I adore Farmville. Fairly addicting and keeps me busy during the day if I'm bored. Plus, I like the animals. lol. But I've stopped growing the crops because the urge and NEED to get on to check my farm was becoming overwhelming and TOTALLY not healthy.

I like games, but I am with you on this one. I have attempted it a few times, only to completely forget about it for a couple of months to go back and find a virtual wasteland. Maybe I'm just not a farmer???

I don't get it either. I am not even clicking on it to find out.

Farmville, Mafia Wars and Poker. Goodbye all of you. It was great knowing you.
Man, they were really addicting. I was spending hours playing Poker earning money, which I couldn't use anyway! So goodbye games and bye Facebook. Hooray!!!
Happy Farmville to you...:)
Have a good day!
